Magnificent Bastard Cocktail Contest – UPDATE

There are now only eight cocktails remaining and boy is this turning out to be quite a competition.  I’m happy to say that my cocktail is still in the mix (pardon the pun, again) and seems to be doing quite well with the judges.  This week, however, we have quite a matchup.

So head on over to Magnificent Bastard and check out the brackets.  The final eight cocktails all look pretty enticing, although I must say I have a few favorites.  And stay tuned for an update on Friday of this week when the next round commences.

Magnificent Bastard Cocktail Contest – UPDATE

Well, the first round of the Magnificent Bastard Cocktail Competition is underway. Looking through the entries got me thinking about all of the great liquors and liqueurs that are being used and how underused they often are in real life.  We always see gin, vodka, and rum as the main base in cocktails.  But liquors like scotch, whiskey, cachaca, cognac and absinthe, if mixed with the right liqueurs, can be great options as well.

Take a look through the entries in the Magnificent Bastard competition and you’ll see what I’m talking about.  There is scotch everywhere; there are vermouths and ginger liqueurs; there are elderflower cocktails and green chartruese.  It is these options that make cocktails so unique and so complex.  Who would have thought that combining black licorice flavored absinthe with dry gin, sweet elderflower liqueur, and aged bitters could provide you with the ideal concoction?

You’ll see more liqueuer reviews on this site in the future and I’ll try to give you more ways to use them in you everyday drinking.  They are, after all, what make cocktails so great.  Right now, I’m drinking Domaine de Canton Ginger Liqueuer, so expect a review on that soon.

And one more thing, my cocktail has made it through to the next round! I’ll let you guess which one is mine for now…

Top 32 Cocktails Announced in Magnificent Bastard Contest

The first cut has been made in the 2010 Magnificent Bastard Cocktail Contest and the field has been narrowed down to 32 entries.  The cocktails all look interesting with ingredients ranging from Domaine de Canton to Green Chartruese to St Germain and beyond.   You can peruse them at your convenience while you look over the bracket here.  I’ll let you guess which one is mine…for now.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Cocktail Competitions 2010

There are a few interesting cocktail competitions floating around this month.  If you have the chops, might as well throw your hat into the mix.  Here are two that come to a close soon, but there is still time for you to get your entry in.

1. Magnificent Bastard is having a classic cocktail competition, trying to find a new cocktail that can sit alongside the martini, manhattan, etc.  Make sure you read their basic principles before entering so you don’t get laughed out of the competition.  Winner gets a $500 gift certificate to Kegworks  where you can buy all sorts of cool stuff.  You only have until January 31st to enter here, so get moving.

2. 42Below Vodka is throwing a “Cocktail World Cup”.  Not surprisingly, they’re looking for entries that use their products and they have a little survey to see if you stock 42Below at your bar.  Maybe just for the data, maybe not,  I suppose we’ll see.  This is the first round which eventually leads to regional competitions across the US and then to a final in New Zealand, all expenses paid for the winner.  You have until February 15th for this one.

As more cocktail competitions come to light I’ll be sure to post.
